Introduction
The pan is a hollow conical instrument whose name comes from the Spanish batea, meaning pan. Shaped like a Chinese hat, the batée is the basic tool of the gold panner, but is also used for mineral prospecting. Thanks to its shape and a mastered technique of rotation in the water, the pan exerts a hydraulic centrifugal force on the alluvium. The lighter alluvium is evacuated first, while the denser material remains at the bottom of the pan.
